Rukhsana first started practicing yoga in London in 1999. After having experienced a variety of different schools and forms of yoga and meditation here and abroad, Rukhsana formalised her training with Yoga Therapy Ireland and has been teaching since 2006.
Believing in the holistic and therapeutic effect of classical Hatha yoga her personal practice and teaching is influenced by meditation and focuses on cultivating awareness of the self and body and finding stillness within. Rukhsana believes yoga is for ‘every’ ‘body’ and not just for the fit and flexible. She is more interested in helping people release tension in the body than creating more, by pushing the body to ‘do’ the perfect yoga pose. Great emphasis is placed on correct body alignment, mindfulness is encouraged throughout the sequence of gentle but strong asana and pranayama (breathing) that works on a deep level. Challenging poses are modified and the individuals’ body is adjusted to ensure safe practice.
Rukhsana has also been teaching pregnancy yoga since 2006, in dedicated classes, private 1 to 1s and to pregnant students in her regular classes. She experienced the inumerable benefits herself during two very healthy pregnancies and births, of which one was a homebirth.
Rukhsana continues her yoga training regularly. Her practice and teaching is inspired and influenced by other teachers, meditation, philosophy, art, her children and life.
